This book is the first qualitative study in Serbian social science literature of identities of the so-called special patients, that is, psychiatric patients who committed criminal acts, examining the subjective views and meanings ascribed to their experience by the special patients themselves. Subjects’ narratives of their own lives are presented, treating their stories as personal truths carrying equal analytic value as scientific truths. The study, involving the analysis of life stories of 49 people, is innovative both in terms of the approach to the topic and of the topic itself. It is a major contribution to sociological, legal, and medical studies.
