The book analyzes the phenomenon of ethnic heterogamy in Yugoslavia, from the postwar period to the early 1980s, on the basis of national statistical data. General rates of ethnically mixed marriages are presented, their change over time, territorial distribution (across republics and provinces) as well as ethnic group distribution (incidence in particular Yugoslav nations and frequencies of particular combinations), degree of openness and influence of non-demographic (i.e. social and cultural) factors, such as social structure, degree of development, religiosity, literacy, or women’s economic activity.
