The texts collected in this book were written over a period of three decades. Although thematically diverse, they are linked by the idea that domestic sociology—through socialism, the transition period, and beyond—has been under the dominant influence of ideology and ruling political ideas. This influence was reflected in the thematic and theoretical shifts that followed political changes. Socialist and liberal-democratic ideologies alike restricted the comprehensive development of sociology, as evidenced by the fact that the discipline was at its most vital and prolific during shorts periods of ideological interregnum.
