By focusing on peripheral development contexts at all levels (global, national, regional, and settlement-level), through a characteristic intersection of social and physical space, rural sociology constitutes an important niche within contemporary sociology. Accordingly, this book aims to present key conceptual approaches and contextual specificities in the development of rural sociology, and to illustrate the contribution that a rural perspective makes to recognizing the full spatiality of contemporary, urban-centered society.
